Making Iron in may 2011

Rödjord

In northern Skåne, a centre of iron manufacture during the later Iron Age and early Medieval time in the Danish Kingdom, we found a site with very iron-rich soil.

 

Rostning

The red soil consists of the iron oxide Fe2O3 which is reduced to Fe3O4 (Magnetite) in roasting process.

 

Blåsning

Making iron in a replica of an Iron Age furnace.
