PICTURES FROM THE ISLAND OF PICO

The Pico volcano seen from the
sea in the north

The summit of the 2300 m high Pico volcano seen from 1200 m.

The
astonishing landscape of Pico: hidden in the clouds is the Pico volcano with
smaller
craters in the foreground. The lake in the Caveiro crater contains the
longest Azores
sequence found so far, ca 9 m of sediments.

A close-up panorama view of Lagoa da Caveiro,
3.5 m deep and with 9 m of sediments.

Another panorama view, this time
from a crater with twin lakes, Lagoinha.

A view over Lagoa do Ilheu and
Lagoa do Peixinho

Lagoa da Rosada

Lagoa da Negra

Lake Paul, where we lost one
corer and 5 rods,
although we tried to pull the
corer up with our car!

Our fantastic hotel, Aldeia da
Fonte, west of Lajes de Pico.

The Pico volcano seen from Lajes de
Pico, east of the volcano. Aldeia da
Fonte is situated at the green sea
cliffs in the centre of the picture.
