PICTURE GALLERY FROM SOME OF MY FIELD WORK
in ANTARCTICA

A beautiful
day in front of the tent on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, Antarctica

A heated but friendly discussion inside the “dining” tent on James Ross Island (while the
hurricane threatened to tear the tents apart, as shown below) between two of my closest
colleagues, Olafur Ingolfsson and Per Möller. A bottle of Argentinian Cognac Nationale
also warmed up the atmosphere!

A hurricane in Brandy Bay, James Ross Island, made all outdoor activity impossible for
almost 5 days. Although the wind bombarded the Argentinian tents with gravel and pebbles
they stood the challenge.

To our surprise even the high kitchen and “dining” tents withstood the hurricane

Coring in the so-called Zano Lake on Horsesoe Island, Antarctica.

Lake sediment core from Lake Åsa, Livingston Island, with two
distinct tephra horizons, dated to 2750 and 2500 yr BP.

A bunch of farting and belching male elephant seals on Livingston Island,
filled up by squids and just enjoying life with the buddies on the beach.

Some curious Antarctic friends on James Ross Island, discussing where the party is.

Along the beautiful western side of the Antarctic Peninsula,
where glaciation reaches down to sea level.

The ship Stena Arctica amongst sea ice and plateau ice bergs in
the Weddell Sea waiting for landing helicopters.
