Research

 

1. Phanerozoic Mass-extinction events; Palynology, geochemistry and sedimentology of the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-T) boundary with focus on extinction and recovery of vegetation.

 

Research aims to determine the rate of turnover (extinction and recovery) of plants at the Cretaceous-Paleogene event. Investigations focus on sediments from New Zealand mainland, Campbell Island, , Bolivia and Denmark. High resolution micropaleontology provides a temporal framework for the evolution of new species. Analogies with modern plants and ecosystems provide an important tool for interpreting the fossil record.

     The micropaleontological results are placed in a broader context by sedimentological, geochemical, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy investigations on the same sediments. The extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary provides a tool to interpret other less well resolved mass-extinction events, such as the Permian- Triassic and Triassic-Jurassic events.

 

 

2. Identifying and correlating global Jurassic events

 

This project aims to correlate major Jurassic biological events in marine and terrestrial sequences, linking Southern and Northern Hemispheres.  Project will focus on floristic turnover and recovery patterns using palynological results from the extensively studied Cretaceous-Paleogene  boundary for comparison and as a methodological key.

Study aims to integrate published data from different micropalaeontological fields but also analyse new palynological and geochemical data from Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.
