Excursions

One of SWEDQUA’s main tasks is to organize excursions.

2012: The 3rd annual SWEDQUA field trip to northern Sweden

3 ECTS, 15-20 August 2012
The field trip will take us along a SSE-NNW transect across northernmost Sweden, where we will study large-scale landscape characteristics, glacial landscapes of different age, Holocene vegetation and climate indicators, Quaternary deposits, and processes active in the changing landscape of today. During the trip we will visit some of the classic sites of northern Swedish Quaternary geology and geomorphology. Many of the sites have been part of the research focus from the Palaeoglaciology group and the Quaternary group of Stockholm University over the past 20 years. More information on the content, practical details and registration is available here.

2011: Landscape development and Late Quaternary history of Southwest Sweden

The second annual SWEDQUA excursion consisted of a transect from Billingen in Västergötland to the island of Hållö off the Swedish west coast, and took place at 8-12 June 2011. The theme of the trip was the Pleistocene and Holocene history and landscape development of this region. Among the features we looked at were the following:

  • The drainage of the Baltic Ice Lake at and west of Billingen
  • Formation of the Middle Swedish end-moraine zone and ice-margin behaviour during the Late Weichselian
  • Marine varved clays of the Younger Dryas
  • Drumlins on Kinnekulle
  • Bedrock geomorphology, including the formation of fracture-valley landscapes, as well as subglacial small-scale forms
  • Late Weichselian and Holocene clay stratigraphy, quick clay and landslide development in the Göta Älv Valley
  • Eustacy, isostacy and shoreline displacement in Southwest Sweden and relationships to human habitation (Tanum petroglyphs)
  • The shell banks at Uddevalla
  • Recent processes in west-coast fjords

Fifteen people participated in the excursion and included doctoral students and professionals from universities in Gothenburg, Lund, and Stockholm, as well as geologists from SGU, some consultants, and one professor from Pomona College, California.
The weather was terrific and the conversations and camaraderie memorable!

2010: Postglacial climatic and human impacts on Baltic Sea environments in southern Sweden

This multi-disciplinary Quaternary science excursion, which took place in early June 2010, attracted 14 students from Umeå, Stockholm, Göteborg, Kalmar and Lund. The excursion guide can be downloaded here.
